R&D Annual Report 2019 shows high quality of research at ESMT Berlin

ESMT published 22 peer-reviewed articles, of which eight appeared in the most influential A/A+ journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Management Science, and Organization Science. In addition, five books, 18 book chapters, and four case studies were published last year.

Research at ESMT again attracted grants from various funding resources such as the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant, which was awarded to economics professor Özlem Bedre-Defolie. Her project “Digital Platforms: Pricing, Variety, and Quality Provision” (DIPVAR) will receive €1.49 million until 2024. It aims to develop models for capturing important dynamics of digital platforms, such as Amazon, Alibaba, or Google, and to make recommendations for an effective competition policy in digital markets, which could greatly improve consumer welfare.

Moreover, ESMT implemented the Ingrid and Manfred Gentz Chair in Business and Society held by Gianluca Carnabuci, professor of organizational behavior. The chair’s mission is to develop scientific knowledge that helps leaders act competently and responsibly. It is the school’s first privately funded chair.

ESMT also founded the Bringing Technology to Market (BTM) Center in 2019. Led by Olaf Plötner, professor of management practice, the center investigates strategies of industrial champions in global markets and helps companies develop a competitive advantage.
