New endowed chair: ESMT Berlin expands research on responsible leadership

Gianluca Carnabuci, associate professor of organizational behavior, is the holder of the newly founded Ingrid and Manfred Gentz Chair in Business and Society at ESMT Berlin.

The chair’s mission is to develop relevant scientific knowledge to help leaders act competently and responsibly. It is the first privately funded chair at ESMT.

Manfred Gentz was a member of the Board of Management at Daimler until 2004 and played a central role in the founding of ESMT. “Corporate leaders need a value-based compass for their decisions," emphasizes Gentz. “This is all the more true in our increasingly knowledge-based, interconnected, and innovation-driven society. The new chair in business and society should make a significant contribution towards this.”

At the center of the chair’s research and teaching is the role of trust-based networks. "These networks act as conduits of knowledge and have a deep influence on individual and organizational effectiveness,” explains Carnabuci. “The increasing availability of large-scale data on how people form and use such networks, coupled with increasingly powerful data analytics techniques, represent a huge opportunity for both management research and practice.”

Carnabuci has been a professor at ESMT since 2016. His research to date has focused on the analysis of inter- and intra-organizational networks, particularly with regard to the generation of new technological knowledge.

“Corporate responsibility and trust-based leadership are the cornerstones of our teaching," says Jörg Rocholl, President of ESMT. "I am very pleased that Ingrid and Manfred Gentz are supporting ESMT in this crucial area.”

The ceremonial inauguration of the new chair holder will take place at ESMT on March 6, 2019 at 6 p.m.
