Enrollment at ESMT

During your first week on ESMT campus, you must obtain your enrollment confirmation from the Student Services Office (Room 2.32 A), or a digital version of it, via email.

Required documents

Here is what we require from you, in advance:

  • A signed and dated study agreement: You will receive your ESMT study agreement digitally in the weeks before program start. Please read the document carefully and keep a copy for your records. You can submit your signed and dated agreement via email.
  • Proof of valid health insurance: All students are required to submit a confirmation of their health insurance status issued by a German public health insurance company
Health Insurance

Under German law, all students are obliged to have health insurance in order to study at a German university.

If you are insured in another EU country and you hold the European Health Insurance card (EHIC), this will be considered sufficient (unless you want to take on a working student position or a voluntary internship- in that case, you will need German health insurance).  If you do not hold an EHIC, you can choose to take out German public or German private health insurance.

German public student health insurance plans are more expensive than private insurance plans, and the sign-up process is more complicated. For this reason, exchange students who plan to stay in Germany for just a few weeks or months are generally better served taking out private student insurance. There are, however, a couple of advantages to having public insurance. Firstly, publicly insured individuals do not need to pay their medical costs up front. Instead, the insurance provider pays these to the healthcare provider directly. The other advantage is that public insurance plans cover pre-existing medical conditions.

Please refer to the ESMT Student Handbook (pages 17ff) for more details! (see below).

Once you are admitted as an ESMT exchange student, we will also guide you through getting ready for enrollment at ESMT, including health insurance requirements.

Visa

Generally, all non-EU citizens entering Germany and staying for more than 90 days with the intention to work or study need a visa before entry. Please refer to the pages 4ff of the ESMT Student Handbook (see below).

Exchange students do not necessarily need a student visa, though:

  • If you are a non-EU citizen but you already hold a valid residence permit for studying in another EU country, you are eligible to enter Germany with it.
  • If the duration of your stay will not exceed three months, you will not need to apply for a student visa, either. Instead, you may enter with a tourist visa.

All applicants should consult the website of the local German mission to find out about the visa procedure and required documentation.

The advantage of being a rather small institution is that ESMT pays close attention to each of its new students and ensures that their academic needs are taken into account. I found Berlin to be an amazing city to live in as the qualify of life is unmatched.

Whatever kind of person you are you will find the suitable space for you in this multifaceted city.

I really enjoyed the classes at ESMT. All professors are really available and classes are very interactive and less frontal. With ESMT’s modern study rooms you have the possibility to study in a pleasant and quiet environment.

Furthermore Berlin is an extremely international city, full of beauties to discover.

I had a great experience during my exchange at ESMT Berlin. The courses were structured comprehensively, and I learned a lot at ESMT.  The student buddy program was particularly useful during my first week at ESMT.

My buddy Rishab helped me navigate the campus and introduced me to students from other courses. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I am thrilled to have completed my exchange term at ESMT Berlin.
