Leibniz Association extends funding of Berlin Centre for Consumer Policies with 1.1 million euros

The Leibniz Association has approved a second four-year phase of funding of 1.13 million euros for the Berlin Centre for Consumer Policies (BCCP).

The BCCP is a joint project of seven Berlin research institutions, including ESMT Berlin, who is active with professors Özlem Bedre-Defolie, Michał Grajek, Rajshri Jayamaran, and Stefan Wagner.

Founded in 2015, the BCCP is a cooperation between DIW Berlin, ESMT Berlin, Free University of Berlin, Hertie School of Governance, Humboldt University of Berlin, Technical University Berlin, and WZB Berlin Social Science Center. It investigates the interactions between consumer protection, dissuasive taxation, market regulation, and competition policies.

“The BCCP has proved its value as a facilitator of cooperation and networking across researchers in different disciplines in Berlin,” says Özlem Bedre-Defolie, professor of economics at ESMT and a member of the BCCP board of directors. “It has established a number of academic seminars and workshops as well as an annual conference on consumer policies. We are pleased that the Leibniz Association recognizes the progress that has been made and the increasing relevance of the topic. For the upcoming funding period, the center will put an additional focus on digitalization.”

The BCCP aims to create an international platform for informing policymakers on issues relevant to the current policy debate. Its grant is part of the Leibniz Association’s Germany-wide ScienceCampus program, which selected ten projects for funding or renewal this year.
