ESMT Berlin to host 18th ABIS Annual Colloquium on measuring impact and creating change

ESMT Berlin will host the 18th Annual Colloquium of the Academy of Business in Society (ABIS) on October 29–30, 2019, on its campus in Berlin, Germany.

In light of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the colloquium will reflect on three decades of global transformation. The central theme of this year’s conference is “Business in Society: Measuring Impact and Creating Change.”

As more and more companies take steps to be more responsible in how they treat employees, communities, and the planet, new challenges arise. These include difficulties in measuring impact, the amount and quality of data, and the variety of reporting frameworks and tools. Speakers and participants representing science, corporates, startups, public agencies, and NGOs will share the latest academic research, best practices, and innovations to tackle these issues.

“We are delighted to host the ABIS Colloquium at ESMT Berlin,” says ESMT President Jörg Rocholl. “As a member of ABIS, we support collaboration between business schools and companies that advances sustainability efforts and contributes to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Given the excellent work of the ESMT Center for Sustainable Business and Leadership, we are well positioned to co-organize this year’s event.”

Ivo Matser, CEO of ABIS, says, “There is no doubt that sustainability is becoming a critical success factor for business. That is why during this year’s ABIS Colloquium we focus on measuring impact and creating change; business as usual doesn’t work anymore to have a positive impact on society! We need to change paradigms. This can only be achieved by collaborating with multiple stakeholders as ABIS has been doing for the past 18 years, for example, with our long-term member ESMT.”

ABIS was founded in 2001 by major companies and leading business schools around the world, driven by a shared belief that advancing the role of business in society required more relevant research and knowledge as well as new leadership skills and mindsets. Each year the ABIS Colloquium convenes over 150 senior figures from various areas to address a key dimension of the global sustainability debate. Speakers at this year’s event include Ryan Gellert, General Manager, Patagonia; Ulrika Hasselgren, Global Head of Sustainability and Impact Investment, Danske Bank; Ernesto Ciorra, Chief Innovability Officer, Enel; and Susanne Stormer, Vice President Corporate Sustainability, Novo Nordisk.
