ESMT Berlin: President and CFO sign on for five more years

The supervisory board of ESMT Berlin has extended the contracts of Prof. Jörg Rocholl, president of ESMT Berlin, and Georg Garlichs, CFO, for five more years.

During the tenure of Jörg Rocholl and Georg Garlichs, ESMT has successfully achieved many milestones. These include receiving the right to award PhDs, the opening of two centers and institutes, and earning the “Triple Crown” of international business school accreditations: AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS. During this time, ESMT also entered the Financial Times ranking of Top 100 full-time MBA programs, successfully launched an international Master’s in Management program, and expanded the campus in Berlin to accommodate a growing student body.

The president’s appointment follows a rigorous process defined in the charter of the school. The nomination committee, comprised of Dr. Werner Zedelius, member of the management board of Allianz SE and chairman of the ESMT supervisory board; Prof. Stanley Baiman, chairman of the ESMT academic board and William H. Lawrence Professor Emeritus of Accounting, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania; and Dean of Faculty Catalina Stefanescu-Cuntze, a member of the academic committee at ESMT, made a unanimous recommendation to the supervisory board.

Dr. Zedelius said, “The successes of recent years are proof that the reputation and reach of ESMT are constantly growing. I look forward to continuing on this path together with Jörg Rocholl and Georg Garlichs.”

“Jörg Rocholl is a proven leader and a renowned scholar. With his continued focus on top quality research and world-class management education, he is poised to take the business school to the highest level of excellence,” stressed Stanley Baiman.

Jörg Rocholl has researched and taught at ESMT since 2007 and was appointed president of ESMT in 2011. Since 2010, he has held the “EY Chair in Governance and Compliance.” He is member of the economic advisory board of the German Federal Ministry of Finance. He is also the vice-chairman of the economic advisory board of Deutsche Welle, research professor at the Ifo Institute in Munich, Duisenberg fellow of the European Central Bank (ECB), and research member of the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI). He graduated from the Universität Witten/Herdecke, where he earned a degree in economics with distinction. After completing his PhD at Columbia University in New York, he was named an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Before joining ESMT in 2014, Georg Garlichs was Chancellor/CFO of EBS University in Wiesbaden/Oestrich-Winkel. He has several years of experience as managing director and CFO of medium-sized companies. He studied international business administration in Passau, Paris, Oxford, and Berlin.
