The paper “Protecting Their Turf: When and Why Supervisors Undermine Employee Boundary Spanning”, co-written by ESMT's professor Eric Quintane, has recently been accepted and will be published in the Journal of Applied Psychology.

While seeking advice outside of one’s supervisor zone of influence can provide benefits in terms of problem-solving, creativity, or more generally institutional knowledge, this article demonstrates that some supervisors may react negatively and engage in undermining behavior. Importantly, the article shows that when employees seek advice from the supervisor him- or herself, it reduced the likelihood of a negative reaction. The researchers discuss how these insights contribute to boundary-spanning literature, territoriality theory, and leadership literature.
