The Digital Society Institute (DSI) is conducting original research on the IT value chain and IT infrastructure market in the European Union (EU)
The information and communication technology (ICT) sector in Europe has undergone significant changes over the past decades, experiencing rapid growth with the expansion of IT infrastructure offerings such as cloud computing in the form of IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS, accompanied by increasing demand for on-premise hosting, colocation, and OEM/ODM products. The increasing complexity and interdependencies within the IT infrastructure market and the IT value chain in the European Union are challenging the ability of corporate and institutional customers to choose IT service providers.
As only limited research has attempted to understand the nature of these new challenges, the DSI is conducting a study to fill this gap by providing a comprehensive overview of the complexity of the IT value chain and the IT infrastructure market in the European Union, by analyzing cloud computing and on-premises computing in particular. Our research project aims to identify the key corporate players in the EU IT infrastructure market, highlight the most significant developments shaping the broader EU IT value chain, and discuss the main preferences and trends driving the decision-making process of corporate and institutional customers. It draws on a mix of qualitative and quantitative data, including an online survey, focus group and expert interviews, as well as publicly available revenue data. Building on previous research, the project looks into changing customer preferences within the European Union and the developing trends related to new technologies including AI-integration, the use of multi-cloud and edge computing.
