This funding marks a crucial milestone in the restoration of the building located at Schlossplatz in Berlin and home to ESMT since 2002. The focus lies on the western, not yet renovated wing, which historically housed the State Council’s assembly hall and, above it, a cinema used for film censorship in the GDR. The goal is to preserve the distinctive surfaces and architectural features with great attention to detail, while also installing lecture hall structures for academic use that could be removed or adapted in the future.
“The support of the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz and the Villum Foundation means a lot to us,” said ESMT President Jörg Rocholl. “Their contribution enables us not only to preserve an important cultural monument, but also to reopen a part of German history to the public and to develop it even further as a place for learning and exchange.”
The former GDR State Council building, known for its iconic façade with the “Liebknecht Portal,” is both a historic symbol of the capital and a vibrant part of Berlin’s urban development. Since its establishment, ESMT has used the building and combined education, research, and culture under one roof. “The restoration is a key contribution to safeguarding this cultural heritage,” Rocholl added.
The Villum Foundation’s support was officially announced on April 17, 2025, during the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz. Representatives from the foundation visited the construction site and thus underscored the restoration’s importance. Andreas Grabsch, team lead of donor services at the DSD, noted, “This project demonstrates how international partnerships and targeted funding can help preserve significant architectural landmarks. It is a privilege to work with ESMT and dedicated partners like the Villum Foundation.”
