Learn to face future challenges in cyberspace

While ransomware and other types of malware continue to proliferate over the internet, companies, governments and organizations are confronted with ever rising security challenges. In order to prepare for cyber threats and risks associated with digitization, the Digital Society Institute offers a broad portfolio of trainings for professionals working in cyber, such as mid- to senior level managers and policymakers. With offers in German and English, the DSI aims to strengthen cybersecurity on a national and international level by providing professionals with the tools they need to tackle the security challenges of the 21st century. We offer trainings for senior business leaders, cybersecurity managers, information security managers, compliance specialists, policymakers, and other professionals in executive functions.

With longstanding relationships and experience working with German government and industry as well as with European institutions, DSI is an interdisciplinary hub of expertise on cybersecurity, secure digital identities and IT security law. Working closely with business partners and academic institutions, we have established trainings that satisfy demands of business, government and academia alike. Our qualified trainers from European industry, academia, and government institutions offer a selection of 3- to 5-day executive education courses for managers, policymakers and executives.

Program Details

Cybersecurity Management (English)

Our Cybersecurity Management program is an intensive 3-day program for managers, where you will learn how to contribute to the planning, implementation, improvement, and review of an enterprise-wide cybersecurity management program to reduce digital risk. It covers topics such as the strategic importance of cybersecurity, the relations between cybersecurity, information security, business continuity management, cyber resilience and protection, IT security frameworks and standards, cybersecurity risk management, and cybersecurity incident response and recovery.

IT-Compliance Management (German)

Our IT-Compliance Management course is an intensive 3-day program for managers with knowledge of IT and data protection, where you will receive an overview of the legal requirements, standards and norms relevant for IT compliance, and learn how to evaluate and know how to implement them in practice. It covers topics such as IT compliance, IT governance, risk management, IT requirements (operations and systems), data protection, IT compliance management systems as well as COBIT and ISO 37301.

Business Resilience Management (German)

Our Business Resilience Management course is an intensive 3-day program for managers with interest in business emergency management, where you will learn how to contribute to the planning, implementation, improvement, and review of an enterprise. It covers topics such as the strategic importance of organizational resilience, business and IT service continuity management, risk and information security management, integrated management systems, an introduction to German basic protection standards (ISO 22301, ISO 27001, ISO 27031), as well as best practices and immediate measures.

Implementing EU Cybersecurity Regulation (English)

This 3-day course will introduce major requirements stemming from recent EU Cybersecurity Policy and regulation, explaining how current requirements arose out of a small number of key policies/legislative instruments such as the EU Cybersecurity Strategy, the NIS Directive and the Cybersecurity Act. The approach will combine theory and practice in order to illustrate how to combine people, process and technology into a cybersecurity approach that is adapted to the business model of the organisation. The course will be highly interactive and participants are invited to discuss issues that they are currently faced with and will also incorporate a case study for participants to solve in groups.

Heli Tiirmaa-Klaar

Director, Digital Society Institute

Heli Tiirmaa-Klaar is director of the Digital Society Institute at ESMT Berlin. She was Ambassador at Large for Cyber Diplomacy and Director General of the Cyber Diplomacy Department at the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and worked in several roles involving cyber policies and diplomacy at NATO HQ International Staff, the Eurpean External Action Service and the Estonian Ministry of Defense.

Prof. Dr. Christoph Thiel

Former Senior Researcher and Project Lead, Digital Society Institute

Prof. Dr. Christoph Thiel is a former Senior Researcher and Project Lead at the Digital Society Institute at ESMT Berlin. He is a Professor for Computer Science at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, previously working as a Professor at University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf and Head of Department at the Fraunhofer Institute IST in Berlin.

Dr. Steve Purser

Head, Core Operations Department, ENISA

Dr. Steve Purser is Head of the Core Operations Department at ENISA, which he joined in 2008 as Head of the Technical Department. Purser is currently a member of several steering boards and advisory committees, including the Steering Board of the CERT EU and the Programme Board of the EU Cyber Crime Centre. He has a PhD in Chemical Physics from the University of East Anglia and a B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Bristol.
