Sigmar Gabriel appointed honorary senator of ESMT Berlin

ESMT Berlin has appointed Sigmar Gabriel as an honorary senator, recognizing his long-standing commitment to democracy, Europe, and open dialogue between politics, business, and society. The distinction honors his role as a trusted partner of the school and his contribution to strengthening Berlin’s national and international reputation as a center for business and academic excellence.

The appointment as honorary senator is one of the highest distinctions awarded by ESMT Berlin. Each year, ESMT selects a single individual whose public service credibly reflects the school’s values and whose work has had a lasting societal impact. The title is reserved for individuals who demonstrate sustained commitment to the common good and actively support ESMT’s mission to foster responsible leadership.

“I have been actively involved with ESMT Berlin for many years and greatly value its clear commitment to internationality, innovation, and social responsibility,” said Sigmar Gabriel. “Being appointed honorary senator is a special honor for me. I look forward to continuing to support Germany’s leading business school in strengthening the global impact of European education and research and in preparing young leaders for a world in which economic success and responsibility for democracy and freedom belong together.”

Sigmar Gabriel held several senior positions in the German federal government over many years, including federal minister for the environment, federal minister for economic affairs and energy, federal foreign minister, and vice chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. He currently serves as chair of Atlantik-Brücke.

“By honoring Sigmar Gabriel, we recognize a leader who has consistently paired political responsibility with a sharp awareness of the broader economic and social context,” said Jörg Rocholl, president of ESMT Berlin. “He brings his extensive experience in foreign and economic policy into dialogue with our students and partners and is a strong public advocate for a democratic, open, and internationally connected society. His appointment as honorary senator recognizes his sustained engagement and his contribution to the values of our school.”

Harald Christ, who was appointed the first honorary senator of the business school, added: “With his exceptional understanding of economic and political dynamics and his many years of experience at the national and international levels, Sigmar Gabriel embodies the values and ambitions of ESMT in a distinctive way. The school will benefit greatly from his expertise, foresight, and ability to bring people together.”
